A knight is an ordinary citizen who has been bestowed with the honorary title of knighthood by a monarch or other political figure in recognition of their service to the monarch or nation, particularly in a military role. Knighthood has traditionally been awarded to mounted warriors in Europe. Knighthood was viewed as belonging to a lower aristocracy during the High Middle Ages.

By the Late Middle Ages, Lyman, the rank had come to represent the values of chivalry, a set of rules for the ideal Christian warrior at the court. As in the British honors system, the title of knight has been entirely honorary since the Early Modern era and is typically given by a monarch for national service that is not in the military.
